Privacy Policies
The Open Textbook Project seeks to maximize user privacy in all our activities. In practice, this means:
- We do not sell or share any personally identifiable information with any other entity.
- We collect and save the least amount of information required for the task at hand.
- We move all data offline and store it in an encrypted format as soon as possible.
- We do not include any personally identifiable information in any reports, communications, or presentations.
Announcement List
Email addresses are the only data elements stored for the Open Textbook Project announcement mailing list. The mailing list database does not include names, addresses, titles, or organizational affiliations. Unless explicitly agreed to by our users, we do not share lists with partner organizations, sponsors, and other funding organizations.
We send occasional mailings (no more than once per month) to members of our mailing list with updates on recently published reports and news about upcoming projects. All announcement mailings include a single-click option to opt out of all future mailings. Mailings to the list never include any advertising.
Website
The Open Textbook Project collects the least information required to provide a good user experience for our website. This information includes your IP address (so we can deliver the page to you), the browser you are using (to ensure the page is correctly formatted), and details about the screen size you are using (to scale and format the web page properly). This enables us to create a site that adapts to your device and browser. We do not share any of this information with any third party. The website does not use cookies or other user tracking mechanisms. For example, we use the "noreferrer" tag on all external links, which prevents any information from being passed to the external site.
The Open Textbook Project website records user activity logs to allow us to track how our site is being used, including counts of downloads and visits. These logs include the IP address used to access the website, but no other personal user information. Open Textbook Project weblogs are not shared with any other organization.
